Some of the most beautiful work of this craftsman, and many others, are in this book “Liège Gunmakers through their Work. 1800 - 1950”.

Pieper Bayard 1908
This is the famous
Bayard 1908
pistol of the
Anciens Etablissements Pieper
in Herstal (Liège). It’s a pocket pistol in a calibre of 6.35 mm, it seems to
me. He bears the emblem of the Knight Without Fear and Without Reprobation. It
was the subject of patents n° 190 623, 200 182 and 235 869 filed in 1906, 1907
and 1911 by
Bruno Clarus rue
des Armuriers, 20 in Liège. These patents were bought by the
A.E.P.
Clarus
will then become director of the firm. The weapon is completely covered by a
foliage-type engraving. She also has two blisters of Bakelite, I think, marked
Bayard.
The weapon bears the hallmarks of the Liège proofhouse, namely:
ELG* in a crowned oval: definitive acceptance after 1893.
Peron: inspection, in use from 1853 to the present day.
B*: Controller’s countermark, in use from 1877 to 1968.
R crowned: striped gun, in use from 1894 to 1968.
PV surmounted by a stylized lion: smokeless powder proof, in use from 1898 to
1968.
The weapon also bears the following markings:
15 012: numbering of the weapon.
Drawing of the knight Bayard on his horse: company trademark.
